Since its birth 1949, the People’s Republic of China has been in a state of tension with the West in general and the USA in specific. In the aftermath of the 11th September attacks, however, China utilised the language of America’s ‘War on Terror’ to legitimise its persecution of the Muslim Uyghurs – and other Turkic peoples – of East Turkestan. In doing so, the aims of the Chinese Communist Party concurred with that of America’s neo-Conservatives.

One of the outcomes of this was, for a time, failure to recognise the struggle of the Uyghurs and their persecution by the Chinese government. This included the case of 22 Uyghurs who were imprisoned by the USA in Guantanamo without charge for many years before they were deemed innocent. None of them, however, could return to their homes in East Turkestan for fear of arbitrary imprisonment and torture by China.

As the outcry against China’s cultural genocide against the Uyghurs grows louder, CAGE brings to you both survivors of and experts in a part of this ongoing tragedy that few have properly understood.
